Soo Joo
You may recognize Soo Joo from the countless covers of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Allure or W Magazine she has graced the world over. Or perhaps from her time as an exclusive face of Chanel, or as the first Asian model to be a global ambassador for L’Oreal. Wherever it’s from, it’s safe to say you know Soo Joo as a supermodel. However, she is not just a supermodel.
She is an artist, multi-faceted to a fault, letting emotional instinct determine her next move. From acting on the Emmy-nominated Sense8 from the Wachowskis (The Matrix), or working with world-renowned artists Philippe Parreno and Pierre Huyghe on her visual art project, Soo Joo is constantly seeking the next creative endeavor that begs her input. Despite these and her many other forays into all creative mediums, the one she has constantly returned to is her first love - music.
For Soo Joo, music is placed heads and shoulders above all other mediums as it exists as both an introspective, intimate practice as well as being a universal catalyst for humans to connect with each other. She has quietly written and composed music over the years, jotting melodies and lyrics down whenever time allowed, to DJing for Chanel, Canada Goose, and many others. These two roles came to a turning point when she had the opportunity to perform live on the runway for the Chanel Métiers d’Art 2021/2022 show.
With the release of No Ghost, Soo Joo is reclaiming her agency as a living, breathing, human being. She is not just your face, and in turn, there is no brand or designer to take the blame or to curry favor. There is just Soo Joo, vulnerable as the day she was born, forfeiting the safety net of a cosign.
