School Fair is a five-piece indie band from Ōtepoti, Dunedin, New Zealand: Findlay Buchanan, Semisi Ma’ia’i, Hamish Morgan, De Stevens, and Rose Pickernell. Formed in 2021, the group began recording on a 4-track tape recorder in a freezing industrial space, resulting in their debut Gorse on a Hill, followed by 2025’s Bird the Kid. Their melodic, intricate music pairs atmospheric beauty with raw, collective experimentation.

Their new album, Unexpected Violence (Mutual, 2026), was made between East London and Dunedin as the band became split between the UK and New Zealand. Building on their earlier live-recorded approach, the record blends jagged guitars, shifting vocals, spoken-word passages, and vivid, poetic lyrics into songs about distance, memory, heartbreak, and the emotional weight of place.
